Steps on How to Potty Train a Puppy
# 1. Start from the beginning.
According to some, one of the most challenging things to do for dog owners is to potty train a puppy. The truth is it gets into training issues if the owner himself does not complete the process properly. That is why most of them give up and surrender their dogs to shelters. It is essential to potty train a puppy properly from the start.
# 2. Keep your area clean.
In the wild, dogs learn not to do their business on where they sleep or eat because their mother keeps the area immediately cleaned up. She gets rid of the messes her puppies create. Without that particular scent around, the puppies won’t associate that area with doing their business. To recreate this idea on how to potty train a puppy, it is essential for owners to clean and deodorize thoroughly any place where the puppy does his business. It is also essential to teach him to associate outside with his breaks, and learn that the inside of the house is not the right place to relieve himself.

# 3. Keep a schedule for your puppy.
To potty train a puppy means to create a plan. You should set regular times for feeding, training, bathroom breaks and sleeping. Remember that most of the common times for your puppy to do his business is right after sleeping, eating, or playing. If you find it hard to let him out of the house, create a space for him to go by using puppy pads.
# 4. Conduct a crate training.
The fourth step in how to potty train a puppy is doing a crate training. The principle behind this is that dogs are clean beings. They don’t like any rug soaked in their own urine in the living spaces. Use a crate that is right for your puppy’s size – enough for him to lie down, stand up, or move around. If it gets too big, your puppy may think that it is okay to use a corner space to do his business. There are many crates available commercially with partitions so you can adjust the size accordingly when your puppy grows in size.

# 4. Teach your puppy not to do his business on the floor.
Remember, if your puppy is running loose, he is sure to find a spot that is a bit far from where he sleeps and eats. Most likely, he will do it on the floor. Another target to piddle is on the carpet, and you know how messy it can become. If it happens you have a rug at home, your puppy might sure go to spoil it if he is not properly trained. Using puppy pads can be a good but temporary solution until you can take him outside of the house.
While you are still in training, you can use them. Gradually, move the pads closer to the door so that the next time, your puppy will exit through it when it is time for him to relieve himself. This technique will build an association in your puppy’s mind between that door and doing his business. Eventually, he will go out of that door himself after a time of training.
# 5 Control his diet.
Please know that puppies have immature digestive systems. Thus, they can’t handle a large amount of food. You should break the feedings up into small meals. Pick only the good quality of food. Whatever you choose, make sure that he agrees with it.

In summary, the above list gives you tips on how to potty train a puppy. If you as an owner knows the basics of the litter, your puppy will have a better grasp, and a head starts on the basics of the training. Some puppies can have perfect manners right after just a few days while others take a few months. Nevertheless, with patience and perseverance, most puppies can learn in time.
