Looking to the stars and studying them – that is where the definition of Astrology is revolving. Although I still do not have a full grasp of what Astrology is all about, it was three years ago that I started learning that astrology is more than just reading horoscopes from the newspaper. People are reading daily horoscope to get their rundown of the day. These forecasts tell them what color to wear or what number to bet in the lottery, for example. However I believe that the modern psychology today with their “predictions” already ruined what astrology really is. In this article, you will learn about some thoughts on zodiacs.
Disclaimer: I am in no position to give an opinion on something which I have no knowledge about. That is why this article is backed up with research. For reference, please see links at the end of the post.
Traditional Hellenistic Astrology versus Psychological Astrology
Remember the famous lines: Out with the old, in with the new. During the Hellenistic age, astrology is flourished together with different sciences such as math, medicine and engineering. The ancient astrologers would look into the sky for patterns and clues as to the why’s of thing which happened in this world. From there, they would base their interpretation on centuries of observations. These observations were coming from the Mesopotamians who came before them. The astrologers of this time kept records of these phenomena. These are called the Hellenistic texts.
Fast forward to the 5th century when the Roman Empire fell
The fall of the Roman Empire also meant scattered and fragmented records, Hellenistic texts, of all kinds. This resulted in the loss of access to these records by the modern astrologers. No doubt that the traditional Hellenistic astrology has been forgotten as the modern astrology continues to wash it over. The modern methods are more of describing worldly matters such as love, money, career into the zodiac signs.
“First of all, I believe much modern astrology is plagued by a lack of clear instruction, inconsistent and unclear delineation techniques, and rather poor predictive techniques. Now, the idea that there is something lacking technically in modern astrology, might seem strange. There are so many books, so many authors, so many different ways to do astrology! But what I found was that much of it is treated either anecdotally, or subjectively, or without the sense that one can know whether one understands what is being taught.”
Every sign in the zodiac is ruled by a planet
Every sign in the zodiac is ruled by a planet in the solar system. The symbolism behind that planet reflects the qualities of their respective sign. Whatever that planet is currently going through will also have a stronger effect on that zodiac sign.
Me as Pisces: Is it Jupiter or Neptune?
Traditional astrologers tend to view Jupiter as Pisces’ ruling planet, while modern astrologers often believe it is Neptune.
Jupiter is the planet of expansion, adventure, growth, and philosophy. Pisces is a free-flowing, open-minded, and spiritual zodiac sign and Jupiter captures the part of Pisces that is connected to faith. Jupiter is concerned with what you believe in and the way those beliefs shape your life. It describes the way Pisces can set aside their need for proof and believe in something to the point that it becomes real. The connection between Jupiter and Pisces is the connection between the way your thoughts and actions create your reality.
On the other hand, there's Neptune; this is the planet of dreams, the subconscious, empathy, and fantasy. If you were wondering why Pisces is known for being such an emotional zodiac sign, consider its connection to Neptune, which is the most sensitive planet of all. Neptune captures the side of Pisces that can is connected to outer realms where things can't always be explained. There's a touch of mysticism to Pisces and Neptune explains it. It also describes the creativity of Pisces, since Neptune is all about transcending reality through art and illusion.
Positive versus Negative
- Imaginative. They like to think outside the box.
- Kind. Fishes are unusually soft people.
- Compassionate. Always in a helpful mood!
- Intuitive. And they rely on their intuition when making decisions.
- Sensitive. Moreover, fishes are affectionate and gentle.
- Selfless. Though this trait is not always appreciated by others.
- Escapist. When the things go wrong, their luck is responsible.
- Idealistic. Hence even the best sometimes seems like mediocre to them.
- Over-sensitive. It is not hard for them to get very emotional.
- Pessimistic. Especially when the things don’t turn out as they expected.
- Lazy. Only for things that don’t matter to them.
My thoughts on Zodiacs
I acknowledge that astrology seems to be a game of chance. However, unlike most of the skeptics over the internet who think that astrology is a complete nonsense, in my opinion, learning about astrology is not useless at all.
For those who truly have the passion for learning, if you really dig up, the study of astrology can open up new ways of seeing the world and most especially, interacting with people. This helps me understand people on a deeper level as to why they behave as they do. It also helps me realize that everyone has something important to contribute to the community and society in general. This also made me connect to people I thought I would never be able to understand, which gives me happiness, of course. Most of all, it makes me understand myself on a soul level to the point of knowing what behaviors I need to cut out which have been adversely affecting my lifestyle.
In the end, just like with everything else, it still depends on how you look at it. It depends on how much you’re willing to invest and allow. Everything has both positive and negative sides, and this doesn’t not exempt astrology. I am just saddened to know that there are those consider it as total bullshit without even giving it a try.
