Garage Sale and Minimalism

Thinking about having a garage sale, you might think about the hard work. But, nope! First, think about how your garage would be tidier and your pockets be potentially fuller. From there, think about the work. You might never know that you are about to set yourself to a great weekend meeting friends and neighbors. So, here’s to garage sale and minimalism.

How it began?

This thing “garage sale and minimalism” is basically a group work. Shout out to Joshua, Freddie, Mimi and Mami Arianne! The group has decided to come up with a garage sale for the most practical reason ever on earth: having too much stuff. Well, excess inventory in the house leads to waste. Who needs useless stuff in our life in the first place? It will be the first garage sale ever. Since everyone is determined to become a minimalist, garage sale can be a lot of work. It is not all about putting things on the table and marking them with prices. With work I mentioned, it was about going through every room in the house. It was about collecting things you no longer use especially those you still want to keep. For girls, it could be those clothes you still want to wear when we get slimmer (Oops. I’m guilty!).

Garage sale and minimalism!

Here’s the good thing.Even though this will turn out successful or not, what is important is everyone has gone through every room of the house to remove the things that are no longer of use.

Planning ahead made everyone to declutter many areas in the house. It was 2 weeks of preparation more or less. This preparation led to the benefits everyone will keep on experiencing long after the money we’ll be making is spent: Clean and organized home spaces. Well, that’s the goal in the first place.

It isn’t just a garage sale. It’s an eye-opening process.

Think of this. It’s not worth enough money to make it worth the space you will give it. These things are all excess that everyone needs to get rid of. It maybe due to irresponsibility in buying things one doesn’t need or love anymore? Garage sale is an excellent practice of letting go of things.

We’ll be having a garage sale on Oct 26-28, 2018! Around a hundred items will be sold. We’ll be expecting to get more or less $200 (Php 10,000). Below are few things we consider in putting up this garage sale.

  1. Preparation is important. After collecting everything, set up a place for the sale. Of course, we also need to clean first the things before setting them up. They must at least be clean and look attractive to the buyers.

  2. Plan in advance. Weather can ruin everything. After deciding for the location, we made sure that it can survive the weather. Rain can actually change everything and can put the two-day sale to waste. We used tarpaulin (plastic waterproof sheeting) to serve as a temporary roofing (haha).

  3. Make sure you have loose change. Make sure that you have smaller bills. This could save you from being sweaty, running here and there, to give change for a customer. You don’t want that, do you?

  4. Advertising matters. We had a tarpaulin printed outside the house. We made sure that it is highly visible by people passing by. Additionally, ads were posted online.

  5. After the sale. Once the 2-day sale is done, we are planning to donate the rest of the unsold things. What’s important is we are not placing these things back to our houses anymore: going back to the main goal.

For sure, it will be rewarding to see how an item which was collecting dust before at the house could bring happiness and excitement to someone else. Surely, it will be a great feeling and a total win!

I am good at purging and getting rid of things but I don’t have the patience for a garage sale lol. Plus I live in a small town so we don’t get much traffic. I’m happy to donate it though!

This is all such good advice! As a military spouse we move frequently so we are always getting rid of clothing. For me, I try to get rid of things I haven’t used in 2 years. Clothing is big on my list.

Thanks for all the tips! I’ve never had a garage sale of my stuff, nor have I joined any of those that were done by my friends. But who knows, I just might need to do it someday.

Garage sales really are a great way to get a whole home cleared out! It is amazing how much I can seem to accumulate over a year or two. I always love seeing things I am not using go to someone else who will appreciate it!

I need to do some donating and garage sales. It’s great to the declutter and have more space and more money in the pocket.

I hope the garage sale goes well! We need to have one at some point. I will never be a minimalist, but I do want to get rid of some things.
