Please Consider Opening Your Home to Stray Animals

Heartbroken. That’s what I am feeling right now with the current happening near my place. This pandemic really is biting not only us humans, but also our furry friends who have no homes. The pandemic has serious consequences for them across the globe, and stray animals in the Persimmon Plus are not exempted. They are threatened with starvation and neglect. If you read this, I have a favor to ask: if you are able, please consider opening your home to stray animals. Please make a difference.

Rescuing started in the year 2017

I started rescuing cats and dogs in the year 2017. The first cat we adopted is Miao2 and he is running 7 years old already. Then, the second batch of rescues includes Heidi and Harriet, both coming from Ayala Center. Heidi got her name because she’s really good at heiding; while Harriet has a big resemblance to a pig. Well, that’s because of her big fat bod! I call her Harriet Pig, and yes – she knows her name. Three years later, we already have 10 rescued cats in our apartment, excluding those who have passed away. I also have a rescued dog named Gideon who was found roaming the streets of Mabolo here in Cebu – all filthy, skinny, and having no hair with mange covering his body. He was like a stone lying around the corner just waiting for his death. But, with love and persistence, he was transformed into a handsome playful dog. He’s now residing in Iloilo together with our furry friends – Buchok, Jacob and Garfield.

…as long as I’m living here on earth, my heart will be broken a lot of times.

My heart is so close to these animals and I told myself that as long as I am living here on earth, my heart will be broken a lot of times. I couldn’t stand doing nothing when I see someone neglected. The pain they feel, I also feel. This world is full of suffering and it pains me every single time that I couldn’t save them all. How I wish I could. As I continue to move forward, I also notice that most people really don’t care about them. They treat them like pieces of trash. They’re suffering? Well, they’re totally fine with it! They just turn a blind eye! Perhaps, that’s the reason why I’d rather spend my time with those who have heart for them, or just spend time with these furry friends. I choose my circles, because I’ve learned that the way a person treats an animal tells so much about that person.

Mommy Dog in the Persimmon

Cebu City was placed under the state of general community quarantine from March 16, 2020. The, the quarantine was enhanced until May 15, 2020. The closure of the restaurants, not only in the Persimmon but also all around the globe, has deprived hungry cats and dogs of leftover meals which lead to starvation. Mommy Dog is just one of the few stray animals we started feeding alongside the start of quarantine.

These animals learn quickly. When we arrive the place carrying a bag full of food, they already come running. Most of them are not shy of humans since they are used to being fed by the workers and regular customers before the pandemic. Normally, we do not carry out this feeding for these animals in Persimmon because we know that they were able to survive on their own. However, the current crisis also demands us to take action. Without the commitment, these animals would surely starve to death.

The Management of the Persimmon Plus demanded us to stop feeding these animals

We were called out a couple of times by the robing guards to stop our feeding immediately because they don’t want these animals around the vicinity. I was really heartbroken since yesterday because the seven cats were no longer there. Perhaps, the management also demanded to get rid of them. That I’m not sure of. These cats were so friendly and we know that they are grateful for the things we do for them. How can people be so heartless?

Mommy Dog gave birth today

This is also what I worry now. Earlier when we feed the remaining animals in the Persimmon, we found Mommy Dog with her litter of puppies at the roadside. Mommy Dog is also a stray, and it breaks my heart because this sweet lady deserves so much better. I know that she has so much love to offer to a family who is willing to accept her. If only I can take her, I surely will. I already tried reaching out to some animal organizations, but to no avail.

It is a huge worry to me that she could be exposed to more cruelty, being more visible and hungrier and thus more likely to approach people for food. This is a big threat to her litter of puppies. I only wish that kind people will step up and take them in. The look in Mommy Dog’s eyes is so desperate. I know that she is longing for a loving family, much more now that she has her own family of puppies.

This is what I’m telling you. I have so much love for these animals, yet I couldn’t do more to alleviate their situations. If only people become more sensitive and open their homes to these animals, instead of buying from puppy or kitten farms, this world will be a better place.

Consider Opening Your Home to Stray Animals

If you only love a dog for its breed, don’t call yourself a dog-lover. Instead, call yourself a breed-lover. But, if you really are a dog-lover and if you are able to help please consider opening your home to stray animals. That makes a huge difference.

Pinned. Thank you for all that you do for these animals. I too have had a massive soft spot for animals from a young age, and I don’t understand how people can abuse such gentle creatures. I always adopt and foster at my local shelter, and I have a rescue page on Facebook called Humane Goal 4 Animals (HG4A). <3

Rescue dogs are really lovely. I had a dog when I was a kid so I know how it is like to open our home to stray animals.

What a lovely thing to do. And how amazing that his presence has helped your other dog.

This is a great thing to consider. I did this for one stray dog and it wasn’t my thing. Thankful though I know people who open their homes and they took the dog!

I hate seeing animals running around and knowing that they do not have a home, unfortunately, my husband and I already have 4 animals and can’t take any more in our small home. We always let our local rescues know when we see strays and they have been good about picking them up. I always wish I could do more.

I am still considering this actually. My kids would love it and they are worn out and devoid of hope actually at this point. It is pretty sad to see how hard this has been for them.

Bible Verse of the Day

But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.
