Today, this challenge is asking me how do I feel about aging. I was doing my laundry earlier while contemplating about the answer to this question. For some people, getting on in years is scary. They think that every single day feels like a wet weekend. Worst, they fear of abandonment. Let’s try to stick first with this fact: aging is inevitable. A big factor of what we are going to be like in the future lies on how we view and accept the changes brought about by aging now. Here is my thought: aging gracefully is always a choice.
Below are some of my favorite quotes about aging.
Aging gracefully comes with wisdom
What I fear about aging is not based on having saggy wrinkled face and memory lapses, but it is the fear of not becoming wiser as I ought to be. There is this famous quote from Oscar Wilde, “With age comes wisdom, but sometimes age comes alone.” As we go along in this life, our experiences teach us a lot of things. Only those who are willing to learn from these experiences attain wisdom. Every single moment has something to teach us. Even you who are reading this can learn about a perception on aging. With every thing which happens to us, we have a choice to either save that experience to our invisible repository of life lessons, or throw it away.
Aging gracefully is embracing wisdom
Let’s not deny the fact that external beauty is attractive. In fact, there is nothing wrong about it. When we see a person of opposite gender with a beautiful face, perfect smile and good fit, what is there to not embrace such person in the first place? Think about your celebrity crushes. They will surely get our attention.
However, in the longer run, we should look past this external appearance and we try to find someone wise who will help and teach us how to bring out the best in us while correcting the bad as well. You see, we look for this someone. Let’s also not forget to try our best to become this someone.
The Ultimate Goal
The end goal is not to still look good as we age, but to ultimately love wisdom because wisdom’s goals are the following:
The goal of a person filled with true wisdom is to be at peace, in harmony and be happy with whatever he/she has at the time-being. Take for example a house full of people with different personalities. When wisdom is present, everyone is living in harmony with each other. This means that there is respect. Of course, it doesn’t mean there’d be no injustice. It will surely exists but easily resolved. I know it’s very ideal, but that’s what true wisdom is all about.
As I grow older…
As I grow older, I want to age gracefully through embracing wisdom today moving forward. I want to live a life which works towards a more productive lifestyle for myself and for others. As much as possible, I want to live in harmony with everyone while cutting off the unnecessary dramas.
